Common Data Environment (CDE)
A single, shared online platform where all of a project's models, drawings, and documents are stored, organized by status, such as work-in-progress, shared, or published, so every project party accesses the same current information rather than working from files emailed around or stored in separate, disconnected systems.
Why it matters
A CDE's status workflow exists specifically to prevent someone from mistakenly working off an unapproved, in-progress file as though it were final, a mistake that's genuinely easy to make when files circulate by email with no clear indication of which version is actually current and approved.
On a real project
A project's CDE keeps a structural model in its work-in-progress area until it's formally reviewed and approved, only then moving it to the shared area other disciplines are permitted to coordinate against, so nobody accidentally builds on an unapproved version.
Who this matters most to
A Document Control Specialist manages the CDE's organization and status workflow. A BIM/VDC Specialist ensures models are uploaded to the correct status area as they're developed.
Where this goes wrong
A subcontractor bypasses the project's CDE and emails an outdated version of a coordination drawing directly to a colleague, who uses it to fabricate ductwork without realizing a newer, already-approved version existed in the CDE with several routing changes. The fabricated ductwork doesn't match the actual current design and has to be reworked.
