What is a BIM/VDC Specialist?

A BIM (Building Information Modeling) or VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) Specialist builds and manages the 3D digital model that represents a project, with structure, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems all modeled together. Their core value is clash detection: finding the spot where a duct and a structural beam are modeled to occupy the same space, for example, before it becomes an expensive problem in the field where cutting into installed work is far costlier than fixing a model.

What they do

Build and coordinate 3D models from architectural, structural, and MEP drawings
Run clash detection between different trades' models and route conflicts back to the right designer or subcontractor
Extract accurate quantities directly from the model to support estimating
Produce coordinated shop drawings and layout points for the field from the finished model
Train project teams and subcontractors on how to use and interpret the model
Maintain the model as changes happen throughout design and construction

A typical day

8:00 AMRun a clash detection report across the updated mechanical and structural models
9:30 AMMeet with the mechanical subcontractor to resolve a ductwork conflict flagged in the model
11:00 AMUpdate the model with a structural revision that came in from the engineer
