General Requirements (CSI Division 01)
The section of the project specifications, CSI MasterFormat Division 01, covering administrative and procedural requirements that apply across the entire project rather than to one specific trade: submittal procedures, quality control requirements, temporary facilities, closeout procedures, and similar cross-cutting items.
Why it matters
Every trade-specific specification section assumes Division 01's procedures are already in place, such as how submittals get formatted and routed or what closeout documentation looks like, so it's effectively the instruction manual for how the whole project's paperwork and procedures are supposed to work.
On a real project
Division 01 of a project's specifications spells out exactly how every submittal must be formatted and transmitted, a requirement that then applies uniformly across the electrical, plumbing, and every other trade-specific specification section.
Who this matters most to
A Project Engineer refers to Division 01 constantly, since it governs the actual mechanics of submittals, RFIs, and closeout that make up much of the job day to day. A Quality Control Manager follows its quality control and testing procedures as the baseline framework for the project's entire QC plan.
Where this goes wrong
A project engineer processes submittals using a generic format from a previous project instead of checking this project's own Division 01 requirements. The architect rejects a batch of submittals purely for improper formatting, creating a delay that has nothing to do with the actual technical content of what was submitted.
